The US military's Central Command (CENTCOM) said it stopped an Iranian missile attack on Tuesday afternoon.
"Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces launched multiple ballistic missiles from Iran in an attempted surprise attack on US forces based in the Middle East," CENTCOM said on X.
"All Iranian missiles were successfully intercepted. US forces remain vigilant and at a high state of readiness."
CENTCOM did not specify where the missiles were fired.
American troops stationed on bases in the Gulf states as well as Jordan have been targeted by Iranian missile and drone attacks this year.
The latest attack marks an end to a lull in fighting that has stretched for days.
Iran on Tuesday rejected an Omani proposal for the equal division of transport routes through the Strait of Hormuz , saying instead that all traffic in both directions must transit through Iranian waters as a matter of national security.
Speaking on Iranian state television, Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said the waterway would remain closed if Muscat refused to acquiesce, adding that Tehran had never recognized a southern route along the Omani coast as an alternative shipping lane.
The so-called Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) — which passes through Omani waters and is recognized by the International Maritime Organization — is currently unnavigable due to the presence of mines.
"This is for national security and not bullying, because when the TSS was for 60 years in Omani waters, we didn't say anything," noted the deputy foreign minister, adding that Tehran would not allow third parties, even those invited by Muscat, to remove mines from the waterway.
The Reuters news agency cited an unnamed Western diplomat as saying Oman meanwhile presented Tehran with a Gulf-backed plan for managing the strategic waterway which involves collecting voluntary fees for passage.
However, a US official reiterated Washington's rejection of any tolls or fees for passage.
Yemen's Houthi rebels on Tuesday claimed to have forced a Saudi-flagged oil tanker identified as the NCC Ghazal to turn around in the Red Sea as part of a naval blockade declared by the Iran-backed group.
"The targeting of the Saudi vessel [with ballistic missiles] came after it ignored warnings," a Houthi spokesman said.
Saudi Arabia, which claimed to have shot down drones in another incident targeting oil facilities, did not comment on the Houthi statement.
The pro-Iran Houthis declared last week a maritime blockade on Saudi Arabia, threatening to further choke the kingdom amid an existing Iranian blockade of the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump and their teams praised cooperation between their two administrations after a closed-door meeting in the Oval Office on Tuesday.
The sit down, the first since the start of the US-Israeli war on Iran, looked likely to go either way before Netanyahu arrived for Senator Lindsey Graham's funeral, with Trump boisterously complaining about the Israeli leader in public, most notably on Fox News.
Tuesday's talks, which lasted for 90 minutes, were described as "positive and productive" by the White House.
In a social media video posted after the meeting, Netanyahu called it "one of the best conversations I've ever had with the president of the United States," adding that it touched on "our common goal: ensuring that Iran does not obtain nuclear weapons."
Tuesday's meeting comes ahead of elections in Israel. The Reuters news agency cited unnamed sources as saying Netanyahu aimed to get Trump's support for his reelection campaign ahead of the October 27 vote.
The EU's foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said in a statement that the bloc condemned an "aggression" this month by Iranian security services against two French diplomats in Tehran.
"The EU unequivocally condemns the aggression against two diplomats of the Embassy of France in Tehran perpetrated by Iranian security forces on July 19," Kallas said.
