After listening to Donald Trump try to explain that he “won” in Iran — while failing to explain what he won — I was confused. I now know. Even as he stood with the French president and other world leaders, it was clear he had nothing truthful to report to the American people. All he seemed to care about was what he gained while spending billions in taxpayer dollars and amid the deaths of many Iranians and several U.S. service members. This appeared to be about proving he did everything better than President Barack Obama. Many informed observers would argue he has not come close to surpassing Obama’s record.
Why did he think people around him wanted to hear a message that amounted to confusion? He delayed his own intelligence nominee’s hearing — for what? Perhaps he assumed people already understood they could not trust his reasoning for canceling it. We also know he pressured Congress on a bill to further restrict voting. We are facing a crisis when a leader uses every possible tactic to limit access to the ballot. At this point, it seems even some of his MAGA supporters may not back him on everything as they once did. He has been losing ground lately — even with a Supreme Court he often appears to rely on.
Consider his remarks about Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, whom he called “low IQ.” He made similar comments about U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett. We know their records, and many would say he does not match their level of intellect or accomplishment.
