Unusual Machines Soars 22%, Red Cat Climbs 8%, Ondas Gains 4% on Trump’s 100% Drone Tariff
Unusual Machines ( NYSE:UMAC ) stock is soaring 22% to $33.24 midday Friday, leading a scattered rally in domestic drone names. The catalyst was President Trump signing a proclamation Thursday imposing tariffs on imported drones and unmanned aircraft parts, citing national security.
Red Cat Holdings ( NASDAQ:RCAT ) shares are climbing 8% to $11.02, while Ondas Holdings ( NASDAQ:ONDS ) stock is rising 4% to $9.27. The reaction thins out quickly from there.
AeroVironment ( NASDAQ:AVAV | AVAV Price Prediction ) shares are up 1% to $191.26 and Kratos Defense & Security Solutions ( NASDAQ:KTOS ) stock is up 2% to $64.29. That’s a 20 point spread between the top mover and more established players on identical news.
The proclamation followed a Commerce Department investigation under the Trade Expansion Act which concluded that foreign-made drones and parts had gained substantial ground while domestic manufacturers lack the capacity to meet military, government and commercial demand. The White House said the program “will protect the national security of the United States and its defense and defense-adjacent industrial base, supporting and creating American jobs.”
The tariffs are tiered: a 100% duty applies to larger drones weighing more than 25 kilograms, thermal-imaging drones, docking stations and certain key parts, while 25% applies to smaller drones lacking sensitive capabilities and additional components. Products from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland and Taiwan face 15%, and qualifying U.K. products where all hardware, software and technology originates in the U.S. or those designated countries face 10%.
The timing matters here. Most of the tariffs take effect 21 days after the proclamation, and duties on less-sensitive components generally carry a 180-day delay, so nothing hits company revenue immediately. The proclamation also authorizes the Commerce Secretary to establish an onshoring initiative encouraging investment in new U.S. drone and component facilities.
The market is pricing exposure to import competition rather than defense spending generally. Unusual Machines makes NDAA-compliant drone components such as motors, flight controllers, cameras and video gear, competing directly against imported parts now facing a 25% duty. Donald Trump Jr. joined the company’s advisory board in 2024 and backed it, per Axios.
Red Cat builds tactical military drones through Teal Drones and FlightWave plus autonomous maritime systems through Blue Ops. The company missed on both lines on August 6, reporting fiscal Q2 2026 revenue of $20.19 million against a $22.58 million consensus and a GAAP loss of $0.26 per share against a $0.17 estimate. Furthermore, Red Cat’s revenue rose 527% year over year, cash sat at $325.55 million, and the full-year target of $150 million to $180 million was reaffirmed.
Ondas spans drones, counter-UAS, ground robotics, secure communications and stratospheric platforms, so tariff benefits are more diffuse. Meanwhile, AeroVironment and Kratos already sell heavily to the Pentagon, so import protection changes less for them. Kratos beat on August 4 with adjusted EPS of $0.21 against $0.15 and revenue of $458.8 million against $411.33 million, raising full-year 2026 revenue guidance to $1.75 billion to $1.81 billion.
The REX Drone ETF ( NASDAQ:DRNZ ) shares are up only 1% to $23.99 on a day when the sector’s headline mover is up 22%. The reason is visible in the Global X Defense Tech ETF ( NYSEARCA:SHLD ), whose latest N-PORT filing shows how prime-heavy defense baskets are built.
As of May 31, SHLD held Kratos at 1.81% of net assets, AeroVironment at 1.32% and Red Cat at 0.26%. By contrast, Lockheed Martin ( NYSE:LMT ) sat at 8.42%, RTX ( NYSE:RTX ) at 7.76%, General Dynamics ( NYSE:GD ) at 7.67% and Palantir Technologies ( NASDAQ:PLTR ) at 7.07%. The fund’s net assets stood at $7.99 billion, and the weightings may have shifted since May 31.
Small drone names are a thin slice of these portfolios. Broad defense funds may barely register even if a component maker’s market capitalization surges.
Investors can watch for whether the 21-day and 180-day effective dates slip or get modified, and whether the Commerce onshoring initiative produces actual facility commitments. Tariffs raise competitors’ costs, yet they don’t by themselves create domestic manufacturing capacity.
The valuation bar is high on the leader. Unusual Machines stock had already more than doubled year to date before Friday’s spike, up 114% through Thursday’s close, so the tariff news is landing on a name that priced in much of the domestic-supply narrative.
Traders can also watch for whether the prime players’ lagging year-to-date performance closes the gap or the speculative small caps keep leading. Kratos stock was down 17% year to date and AeroVironment shares were down 22% through Thursday, an unusual setup heading into a policy tailwind.
As you can see, one policy headline is fueling very different reactions across the drone group. A cautious approach makes sense given how much the pure-play names have already run.
