US Navy transits of Taiwan Strait drop under Trump - Taipei Times

US warships have transited the Taiwan Strait significantly less frequently during US President Donald Trump’s second term than during his first term, or during former US president Joe Biden’s time in office, the Heritage Foundation said in a study published on the US news Web site Breaking Defense on Friday last week.

Allen Zhang, a researcher in the foundation’s Asian Studies Center, and Charity Ihrman, a member of its Young Leaders Program, said in the study that publicly available records project 14 transits for the entirely of Trump’s second term at the current rate.

The projected figure for transits during Trump’s second term would be a 50 percent decline from 28 transits under his first term and a 56 percent decline from 32 transits under Biden, the authors said.

The article, titled “America is sailing through the Taiwan Strait less. Does it matter?” used data collated from official statements of US and foreign governments, news reports, US Navy statements and the Taiwan Security Monitor, they said.

US “transits project American military presence at a time when Chinese warships and aircraft have become routine fixtures around Taiwan,” they said.

“If America’s presence in one of the world’s most contested waterways is quietly fading, the strategic ramifications could be serious,” the authors wrote.

“China has declared the Strait to be its territorial waters, but virtually no other country, including the United States, recognizes that claim as lawful or legitimate,” Zhang and Ihrman wrote.

Moreover, China has been ratcheting up military pressure in the Taiwan Strait, conducting activities ranging from provocative military exercises, passages in unilaterally declared zones and undersea cable cutting, they said.

“On any given day, roughly five or six warships surround Taiwan at all times,” they said.

China’s “daily activity around the island, near weekly joint combat patrols and response exercises conducted during periods of heightened political tensions” have all set yearly highs, they said, citing the US Department of Defense’s 2025 China Military Report.

Some observers have argued that US military transits should be assessed qualitatively rather than quantitatively, and that the Trump administration might have been conducting “silent transits” not announced by official channels, the authors said.

“While true, naval transits play an outsized role in signaling non-recognition of unlawful Chinese maritime claims precisely because of their visibility and regular occurrence,” Zhang and Ihrman said.

While silent transits are preferable to no transits at all, publicly acknowledged naval transits signal to allies and the international community that the US opposes China’s illegal claims and “gray zone” operations in the strait, they said.

“A sudden drop in them can degrade perceptions of American priorities and credibility in both friendly and hostile capitals,” they said.

The Pentagon “should return to the standard tempo of publicly announced routine transits established across the last two administrations,” they added.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s remarks that Taiwan is a Chinese province seeking independence threaten regional peace and stability and could undermine Taiwanese businesses’ confidence in investing in Malaysia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said today. Anwar recently made remarks implying that Taiwan is a province seeking to separate from China, effectively legitimizing Beijing’s position on using force to take Taiwan, the ministry said in a statement. The Republic of China, Taiwan, is a sovereign, independent country and is not subordinate to the People’s Republic of China, MOFA said, adding that that fact would not be changed no matter

UNNECESSARY?: While some said that the switch would mean more sunlight exposure for workers, others said the government should promote flexible working hours instead An online debate has resurfaced on whether Taiwan should switch to the same time zone as Japan, with supporters citing its geographic location and saying that China would have no right to object. The debate erupted on Threads when users suggested that Taiwan should stop using the same time zone as China, Malaysia and Singapore, GMT+8, and instead switch one hour ahead to the same time zone as Japan and South Korea, GMT+9, which it is geographically closer to. Under GMT+9 the sun would set later year-round, meaning that people would see sunlight after getting off work even in the winter and

The Civil Aviation Administration (CAA) yesterday confirmed that Uni Air has submitted an application to suspend its Taipei-Hualien flights due to persistently low passenger rates. The airline, which is the only operator of the Taipei-Hualien route, proposed to suspend the service after Mandarin Airlines, another domestic flight carrier, applied to suspend flights to Hualien departing from Kaohsiung and Taichung earlier this year. The average load factor of the Taipei-Hualien flights during the first six months was 24.2 percent, CAA data showed. The average seat occupancy rate dropped even further to 17 percent last month, even though it was the beginning

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr today said that the Philippines would not allow any attacks from its territory in the event of a conflict in the Taiwan Strait, as it “has no desire to be a belligerent nation in the region.” Marcos later said that his country would continue to follow the “one China” policy while maintaining its existing ties with Taiwan within that framework. The Philippine president made the comments while attending the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines Presidential Luncheon in Manila. He was asked whether he would allow the US military to launch an attack from Philippine bases in the
