Meta's capex guidance isn't cutting it for investors. Stock drops.
Meta Platforms stock ( META ) continues to drop since coming out with second quarter earnings on Wednesday.
Yahoo Finance Tech Editor Dan Howley breaks down how investors are reacting to the Facebook parent company's vague guidance on full-year AI capex.
Dan, you were on this meta earnings call. The lack of specifics on CapX from this company for really, I would argue for the balance of this year and next year, not what the market wanted to hear at all.
Yeah, no, not not I mean in the least. You know, they did uh increase the lower range, so nowing their CapX for this year from 125 to 135 billion. Uh so now it's, you know, 135 to 145 billion.
A lot of money. Uh I think though the other thing though was they didn't give us uh any insights into this kind of data center plan that they've been kind of bandying about, you know, Mark Zuckerberg talked about it uh in one of the earnings calls previously, talked about it in one of the uh during their investor day, uh talked to Bloomberg about it. and so there's been this ongoing discussion of, you know, we have this this capacity, people are coming to us begging us to, you know, allow them to lease it from us.
We're still thinking about it. And so I I think that would have been, you know, a catalyst for the stock if they had said, yeah, we're we're going in on this, we're going to lease some of this capacity and then when we need it, we'll maybe pull it back, but they they didn't give us any of that. It felt very much like a kind of a flattish earnings call overall uh outside of, you know, the the user growth numbers. But yeah, the the the AI side of this was was a little on the downside.
Dan, I I picked up on a pivot inside of this uh meta earnings column. I want to know if you picked up on it too. Uh, of course, we know Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, largely consumer-facing properties. You go in there, post a photo of your puppy and you get likes and comments and everybody loves you. But they seem to be making the pivot towards trying to get a large piece of the business community's business, uh, the enterprise business. Zuckerberg talked a lot about enterprise. Is this a company trying to get customers from Salesforce?
I think it's a company that's trying to diversify away from just the advertising model because it's not going to be enough to really lift what they're trying to do with AI. This is a company that is investing in frontier models. Uh they need to put them to work in some way. And you look at, you know, okay, Google, they invest in in frontier models. They're also in the advertising space, but the way it works for Google is different because you're using it for things like search and that's a natural kind of evolution almost when it comes to using AI.
Consumers are going to be, you know, more more comfortable with that. Now, look at Meta where, you know, you go on Facebook, you know, you go on Instagram or you're on WhatsApp, you're really looking up, you know, people you know or maybe you're looking up, I don't know, a shop that you're interested in. It's not exactly the same kind of way that you would use AI. Then, oh yeah, Google also has its enterprise suite where, you know, you can get on Docs, you can get on Sheets, which is the worst thing on the face of the planet for me, or you know, whatever, the PowerPoint uh equivalent is. Uh you know, that makes sense. I think for Meta they're trying to get into the enterprise space because that feels like the the place where AI is going to do best.
And I mean, you know, look no further than what's gone on with Anthropic and Open AI where Anthropic's kind of just, you know, run away with things recently because they focused so heavily on the enterprise whereas Open AI was more on the consumer side and has since pivoted to the enterprise.
