Egypt’s economic growth seen at 4.8 percent as inflation forecast rises to 13.5 percent - Economy Middle East

Egypt’s economic growth outlook remained broadly stable over the past three months as stronger-than-expected activity and foreign-currency inflows helped the country withstand the Middle East conflict more effectively than initially feared.

Economists estimated that gross domestic product grew 4.8 percent during the fiscal year that ended in June 2026, according to the median forecast of 15 economists surveyed by Reuters between July 7 and 16.

The latest estimate was slightly higher than the 4.6 percent growth forecast in an April poll.

However, economists raised their inflation expectations for the current fiscal year, reflecting continued price pressures and uncertainty surrounding energy costs, supply chains and the regional conflict.

Economic growth is expected to ease to 4.5 percent in fiscal 2026/27 before accelerating to 5.3 percent in 2027/28.

The projections compared with forecasts of 4.6 percent and 5.5 percent, respectively, in the April poll.

Economists expect growth to reach 5.5 percent in fiscal 2028/29.

The relatively small revisions indicate that expectations for Egypt’s broader economic expansion have remained largely stable despite the effects of the Middle East conflict on oil prices, shipping and regional investment conditions.

Egypt had faced concerns over higher import costs, supply-chain interruptions and the possible effect of the conflict on tourism, Suez Canal traffic and investment.

However, preliminary economic data and foreign-currency inflows suggested that the effect was more limited than initially anticipated.

Official preliminary data showed that Egypt’s economy expanded 5 percent during the January-to-March quarter of 2026, exceeding earlier expectations.

The economy outperformed forecasts despite supply-chain disruptions and higher oil prices linked to the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran.

The stronger quarterly result reinforced expectations that full-year growth would remain close to 5 percent.

In May, the Central Bank of Egypt estimated that real GDP growth would average approximately 5 percent during the fiscal year ending in June.

That projection was slightly higher than the 4.9 percent forecast issued by the central bank one month earlier.

The improvement suggested that domestic activity remained resilient, supported by stronger sectors and the continued availability of foreign currency from remittances, tourism and the Suez Canal.

Remittances from Egyptians working abroad surged 31.2 percent to approximately $43.1 billion during the July-to-May period of fiscal 2025/26.

The total compared with about $32.8 billion during the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year.

The increase provided Egypt with an additional source of foreign currency and helped support external liquidity during a period of heightened regional uncertainty.

Tourism revenue and Suez Canal receipts also recovered, strengthening the country’s hard-currency position.

The improvement in these sources reduced some of the immediate pressure created by higher energy prices and disruptions to regional trade routes.

Foreign-exchange reserves rose to a record $55 billion by the end of June, providing the central bank with a larger buffer against external shocks and currency-market volatility.

The International Monetary Fund said in June that it had reached a staff-level agreement with Egypt covering two financing reviews.
