Waymo is making its own AI chip for its robotaxi service

Autonomous rideshare operator — which is owned by Alphabet ( GOOG , GOOGL ) — has begun building its own AI chips to better optimize sensor data, according to Bloomberg.

Yahoo Finance Tech Editor Dan Howley examines Waymo's move to bring more of its technology in-house.

Let's start on Waymo. What what has the company designed here? What does this chip allow them to do exactly?

Basically, this is their uh ASIC. It's a application specific integrated circuit. Real dorky there. That'll get you a wedgie in gym class.

Uh, basically what it does is it's meant to uh kind of combine all of the sensor data that it pulls in. uh the vehicle pulls in. So if you're talking about uh things like visual, you're talking about things like uh sonar, it'll kind of take that and form it into its own picture.

I can I'll give you a uh non-watered down version. Uh let's see. Uh it's a specialized powerhouse to fuse and run advanced neural networks on raw sensor data in real time. Exactly what I said.

Essentially these cars, they have all these sensors. you look at them, no one's going to buy a car that looks like that. I've been in them.

Mhm. It's it's whatever. I mean, you know, I've had Uber drivers that are way worse. Um, you know, this is just a, well, that's their weird little car that they have. I've been in the Jaguar one, but

they're they're covered in sensors and so there has to be a way to take all that, process it in real time and figure out, hey, should I run over that dog or should I, you know, swerve out of the way. And so that's what these kinds of systems do.

Uh, you know, there's other companies uh will use off-the-shelf chips from third-party manufacturers. Google's really trying to I think take everything, you know, from soup to nuts and do it itself because that allows it to better optimize its software with its hardware to ensure everything is hunky dory, especially when it comes to vehicles.

Maybe I'm an Nvidia investor. I'm watching this right now. Am I worried Dan about this headline?

I don't necessarily think you're worried. Nvidia still plays in this. In fact, they actually call out Nvidia, uh as well as AMD, uh Micron, Samsung, SanDisk, uh Socio Next and TSMC, they say that they all work with all of them for these self-driving car initiatives.

So I don't think you necessarily have to be worried. Nvidia also has has kind of moved its its its reporting structure where, you know, they don't break out automotive anymore, they don't break out uh uh uh visualization, they don't break out gaming. That's all under edge computing now.

and they're more focused on the data center, obviously, but they continue to work in the auto space and they work with plenty of companies in that space where they'll uh run the uh kind of, you know, the head unit, you could kind of say as well as the self-driving aspect. So they're totally fine.

This is just, you know, Google doing its own thing. Um, but I you know, I do think it's it's worth noting how more and more of of the and these companies I mean hyperscalers, but more and more of these hyperscalers are looking for ways to bring everything in house so that they don't have to pay for outside chips.

You know, on the consumer side, they do the same thing with their uh their own processors in their pixel phones. Not many people buy the Pixel, but, you know, it's still something. Um it's kind of similar to what Apple does where, you know, they're they have their Apple private cloud cloud compute.

That's their servers, runs on their own chips, everything else that's Apple basically runs on Apple chips as well.
